Procrastinators Unite
How I Stopped Waiting for Motivation and Started Getting Things Done
I have a serious talent for putting things off. I think most people are members of this club —
procrastinators unite... tomorrow!
Take my freezer, for example. I knew it needed cleaning, but I kept saying, "Eh, I’ll do it next week." Then next week turned into next month... and you can guess how that played out.
Eventually, the drawers were so frozen shut that I couldn’t even pry them open. So there I was, forced to deal with it — and, of course, it happened at the absolute worst time when I had zero energy or patience.
The whole thing turned into a chaotic mess, water everywhere, and my mood was toast for the rest of the day. All that hassle over a 30-minute task I kept putting off.
That’s when it really clicked for me: Motivation isn’t the answer — action is.
Here’s what’s worked for me instead:
The 5-Minute Rule: I tell myself, "Just start for five minutes." Once I begin, I usually keep going. Turns out, getting started is the toughest part.
Make it stupid easy: Big tasks feel overwhelming, so I break them down. Instead of saying, "Clean the whole freezer," I’ll say, "Just clear one shelf." Baby steps, folks.
Reward the process, not the result: I celebrate just showing up — even if I didn’t finish everything. Progress is progress.
Now? I don’t wait for motivation — I create it by taking action.
Procrastination isn’t laziness; it’s just fear of starting. Take one tiny step today — trust me, it’s better than dealing with a flooded kitchen and a bad mood later.
